Designed for families in remote outback properties & communities

Michael provides support for complex paediatric cases in rural and remote communities

For families in very remote outback locations — across Qld, the NT and NSW — Michael combines his clinical expertise as a Consultant Paediatric Dietitian (for children with complex needs), and special interests in clinical exercise physiology and child development, with his experience as a Tactical Rescue, Trauma Response & Prolonged Field Care Medic. Michael also has experience delivering clinical services in remote indigenous communities.

This means that Michael brings a rare, multi-disciplinary clinical skillset to rural families and communities. This is often needed for clinicians who are operating independently or in small teams, in very remote field care contexts.

As someone from a 5th-generation farming family in outback Australia, he likes to provide support to these remote families via telehealth and through intensive onsite visits to homes, outback stations and clinics.

Intensive Clinical Assessment, Medical Nutrition Support & Complex Care Navigation for Kids with High Needs

Sometimes it is too difficult for families to travel vast distances with children who have complex medical and disability presentations.

Life can be extremely difficult for children who have severe feeding and nutrition problems, which are part of a complex disability and which are often complicated by multiple chronic medical problems. These kids can have a long list of diagnoses and presenting issues. It is also very hard for parents to find expert clinical advice for these high-complexity kids who have many diagnoses and complex long-term needs.

By special arrangement, Michael visits these very remote families for 1-2day intensive working sessions at their properties and outback stations. As someone from a 5th-generation farming family, Michael knows these rural and remote families can find it very difficult to access expert care. Therefore, these 1-2day intensive sessions are designed to do a deep dive and cover a lot territory. It is a very rare and specialised service.

These intensive visits usually involve extensive clinical assessment, in-depth feeding and medical nutrition assessment, complex medical review and education/planning, advanced clinical nutrition education/planning, clinical exercise physiology education/planning, preparing advanced medical and allied health treatment roadmaps for complex needs, medical nutrition prescriptions and training (specialist products, dosing, mixing, delivery), and tube/PEG feeding management, and more.

Michael is also a specialist rescue medic who is certified as a Tactical Rescue, Trauma Response and Prolonged Field Care Medic (think: intensive management of poly-trauma, multi-casualty scenarios in austere contexts with prolonged evacuation times). Therefore, Michael can also provide clinical assessment, evaluation and care for children in fragile states.

In the event of an unexpected emergency in remote locations, Michael travels with an extensive trauma-care medical rescue kit, along with technology for coordinating specialist telehealth support and evacuation.
